God Sees the Truth, But Waits is a short story that was written and published by a Russian Author Leo Tolstoy in 1872. Leo Tolstoy was one of the greatest authors of all time and won many Nobel Peace prizes in literature in the early 20th century, with also the commandment of another of one of his greatest works, which is “War and Peace”.
The short story starts with the protagonist Ivan Dmitrich Aksionov ahd he is a handsome and an outgoing guy because he was full of vices back then until he had a wife. One summer day he planned to go to Nizhny Fair and he continued his journey despite his wifes warning that he must not go to that place because of a bad dream. He went to his destination, met a merchant along his way soon to be an acquaintance and slept together in an inn. A day after while he was walking, two soldiers arrested him because he was accused of killing the merchant.
The title “God Sees the Truth, But Waits”, tell’s that proving your innocence is easier said than to be done because sometimes the law really dictates someone even without justifications but at the same time it evokes the feeling to the readers that at the end of the day, whether someone would be proven guilty or no guilty, God is the only one who knows the truth and our actions would always judge us if in case we know the event on the first place, will wait for us to speak the right works. It encourages us to be religious and faith is the most powerful weapon for it makes even the worst of all situations get well. Despite all strong beliefs by God, Aksinov was still arrested without concrete evidence. Soon enough he discovered the real killer on the time he was in prison which was Makar Seymonich.
He was angry that time and that is because of the broken justice system that he had faced. Being painfully profounded in a cell and knowing that your relatives would die after your release is one of life’s disappointments. It was believed that only the richest and influential people can manage to taste less of the punishments of the law, it shows the relationship of people in which they have different social statuses, particularly upper and lower class people.
The plot itself has one of the most unusual parts where the protagonist has a very strong sense of resilience. He forgave Makar Semyonich because of what he had done. Forgiving is a humane thing to do as all of us people aren’t perfect and we make bad choices all throughout our lives but forgiving somebody because of a heinous crime symbolizes that people who have a strong belief in God would always forgive. It teaches a philosophical question and they have to discover what reality is (R. Kuli, 2020). Our future is very inevitable, if that is really your fate when it is good or bad we should always accept it. It is part of God’s Plan assuming Aksionov actions are a part of it. Until his death, he still believed and prayed to God during his prison sentence.
To conclude, Tolstoy's work did a good job on all parts, especially it is direct and it shows how life in Russia was before back then there was almost no independence of all countries and human rights were still disputed. Although it expresses a very nice and straight forward lesson, the lessons must not be done in this type of context as the modern era comes, forgiving may also be one of the worst decisions that man ever has to make. The reality is forgiving someone is very contradicting to justice and all sinners must learn the hard way.
