Learning Task 3: Word Problems

There are four steps in solving word problems. These are Understand, Plan, Solve and Check. Every step has hidden questions that will help us understand and analyze the word problems. These hidden questions serve as a guide in finding the answer. Thus, it is important that you know the steps and the hidden questions.

Answering Word Problems

Let us now find the answers using the four steps in solving word problems.

1. Understand:

• What is asked?: How much does the clerk get if he works overtime for 3 hours and 5 hours on a holiday?
• Given: Php 45.50, 40 hrs, 1.50, 3 hrs and 5 hrs

Plan

• Operations: Addition and Multiplication
• Number Sentence: (Php 45.50 × 40) + (Php 45.50 × 1.50 × 3) + (Php 45.50 × 2 × 5) = N

Solve

• Solution:

Php 45.50 × 40 = Php 1,820.00

Php 45.50 × 1.50 × 3 = Php 204.75

Php 45.50 × 2 × 5 = Php 455.00

Php 1820.00 + Php 204.75 + Php 455.00 = Php 2,479.75

• Answer: The clerk gets Php 2,479.75.

2. Understand

• How much does she earn in a week?
• 8.5 hrs, 6.75 hrs, Php 55.25

Plan

• Addition and Multiplication
• [(8.5 × 5) + 6.75] × Php 55.25 = N

Solve

• Solution:

8.5 × 5 = 42.5

42.5 + 6.75 = 49.25

49.25 × Php 55.25 = Php 2,721.06

• Answer: She earns Php 2,721.06.

3. Understand

• How much will the costumer pay?
• 25 pesos, 180 pesos, 5.25 kilos, 3.75 kilos

Plan

• Multiplication and Addition
• (25 pesos × 5.25) + (180 pesos × 3.75) = N

Solve

• Solution:

25 pesos × 5.25 = 131.25 pesos

180 pesos × 3.75 = 675 pesos

131.25 pesos + 675 pesos = 806.25 pesos

• Answer: The customer will pay 806.25 pesos.
