No it is not reliable. For that lets do a activity: Take three jars. Lets mark them as A,B,C. Fill some hot water in A. Dont fill more hot water. Moderately hot. Fill moderately cool water in B. Mix both of them in C or fill normal water or tap water in C. Now keep you left hand in A & right hand in B. Keep them for one minute. Then keep both of our hands in C.
You will observe that the water feels cool to your left hand while same water feels hot to your right hand. This is because your left hand feels hot when it is in A & feels cool in C because there is normal water in C. Same happens with your right hand. When you kept it in B it feels cool & it feels hot when you keep in C.
So, we cannot rely on our hand to say whether an object is hot or cold.
