A fallacy is a logical error that leads to a fallacious conclusion or misperception. As a student, knowing fallacies makes it easier to spot logical flaws in myself and others. Particularly logical errors committed on purpose, such as during discussions. As a result, it is easier to resist employing them in my own arguments, increasing the credibility of my arguments. Mostly preventative, so I know them and am not swayed or defeated by arguments that rely on them.
