In ancient days, Xerxes, King of Persia, tried to subdue Greece. With an army of about three hundred thousand soldiers, he crossed the body of water now called the Dardanelles, which was known as the Hellespont. The only way he could enter Greece from the north was through the Pass of Thermopylae. This pass, about fifty feet wide, which lay between a mountain on one side and sea on the other, was guarded by Leonidas and his force of 300 Spartans, 700 Thespians, and 400 Thebans.
For two days this little band under their valiant leader kept the Persian hordes back. Even the Persian Immortals could not force a way through. Then the unforeseen happened. A Greek traitor showed the Persians a secret path over the mountains. The enemy attacked not only from the front but also from the rear. Leonidas and his countrymen, knowing that they could not save Greece, fought until not one remained alive.
