III. Read the two scenarios below and answer the questions that follow. The Common Long-necked Turtle also known as the Eastern Snake-necked Turtle lives in freshwater habitats including wetlands. They are carnivorous and commonly feed on small fishes, insects, tadpoles and frogs. rayol vestonotontaneous Chien Scenario A Use of chemicals and fuel in factories give rise to water pollution. Such change in the environment increased the competition between the turtles, and resulted in a depletion of the food supply in freshwaters. This created a need for the short-necked turtles to hunt more insects and frogs than aquatic invertebrates in order to survive, which forced them to stretch their necks. This stretching caused their neck to get a little longer. When these turtles produced hatchlings, the baby turtles grew up with slightly longer necks inherited from their parents. These offspring turtles needed to stretched their necks even more and made their neck a little bit longer. In turn, their hatchlings grew up with even longer necks inherited from their parents, and so on. Scenario B Within the family of short-necked turtles, there is a variety of neck lengths. from shorter to a little bit longer than the average neck length. Use of chemicals and fuel in factories give rise to water pollution. Such change in the environment increased the competition between the turtles, depleting the food supply in freshwaters. This created a need for the turtles to hunt more insects and frogs than aquatic invertebrates. The turtles with the slightly longer necks could hunt more insects and frogs. As a result, they obtained more food, lived a little longer and therefore produced more hatchlings. Those with the shorter necks would tend to starve to death. The surviving long-necked turtles tended to have more long-necked hatchlings, which likewise tended to get more food and produce more hatchlings and so on. 11.
