*General explanation of the question* - (When the apple is thrown upwards, it is thrown at a greater force than that of the gravitational force which is pulling downwards. As the apple is going upwards the impact of the initial force (force that you applied while throwing) decreases and then comes a point when the upward force is less than gravity and this the apple falls down.)
So, the upward force exerted by the air on the apple falling down or moving up is equal to the weight of the air displaced by that apple. Take the net downward acceleration. Subtract it from acceleration due to gravity(g) (9.8 m/s^2). The difference is the upward force on the object generated by air resistance.
