For my 15th birthday, I wanted to go to New York for the day and visit a few of my favorite places. At the Met, we sat down to listen to a group of men singing at the foot of the museum steps. Rick looked at him quizzically and then smiled awkwardly. He obviously had no clue what the man was talking about. The others hadn't noticed what was going on yet. "Did you really see him?" we all asked Bruce. We looked where he said he'd seen him, but he was nowhere in sight. Should we open his bag? Isn't that d11ngerous? "I think we need to find a policeman and explain what has happened." This map looks like it has locations for meeting points all over New York. There are times written next to each location, and the times are for later today.
We watched, mesmerized, as the same man walked past Rick and smoothly dropped his backpack and picked up Rick’s. "I'm blind. Please help", a man dressed in black with dark glasses and a cane said. It was a business deal that had gone wrong between Russia and New Jersey. Listen carefully, all of you. The U.S. secret service has your back. We're keeping an eye on you, but we need you to progress with your mission, he said. We headed for Ellis Island. We don't even know what or who we are looking for. The trip from Ellis Island to Astoria Park was filled with wild speculation about the day. No one seemed scared anymore. I said the secret message. Just then, the police ran toward us. "Happy b111rthday, my 15-year-old detective!". I looked around at everyone. My dad and my grandparents were there, dressed as police officers. They were all laughing so much. "So the whole day was a trick?" I asked.
NYC is not a place where the American dream is truly achievable for the middle class, and it’s all the worse for those of us who were born here like myself. It’s explicitly designed as a place for rich people and their servants.
A lot of the things that tourists talk about such as international food exist because the rich and corporations import workers from all over the world (like members of my family, I’m an anchor baby), who bring the demand for familiar foods.
This phenomenon also exists in Dubai. They don’t exist because politically correct people value diversity. The reason for NYC’s diversity is strictly global trade not some California value of equal representation.
Then you have high culture, which some posters have mentioned. High culture exists for and is created by the rich and tourists. Most of the museums are very far from residential neighborhoods like Throgs Neck, Stapleton or St Albans. Free hours at most museums are basically a stampede.
Once you realize these naked facts, you can have a good time here. But realize that this is not a normal place that is designed for people to actually live.
