Once a month, the female releases an ovum (one egg) or sometimes two (ova) . If an ovum has been released, and the couple have sex, a sperm can unite with it, fertilise it and make the first cell of a new baby. Once one sperm has fertilised the ovum, no other sperm can get in

If a sperm cell does join up with the egg, the fertilized moves down the fallopian tube towards the uterus, it begins to divide into more and more cells, forming a balk as it grows. the ball of cells ( called a blastocyst ) gets to the uterus about 3-4 days after fertilization.
