In order to shift a big load person must pull or push it in same direction. If two people are pushing or pulling the load in opposite direction then resultant force is the subtraction of two forces. Strength of force is expressed in its magnitude. However, if forces are applied in opposite direction then magnitude of resultant force is lower. Moreover, equal and opposite forces cancel out and so the resultant force becomes zero. Force applied on the object perform change in motion as well as change in shape of an object.

Some forces acts on object by coming in contact with it whereas, some forces acts without coming in contact with the object. Force which acts with being in contact with an object is called contact forces. Muscular force, friction forces are contact forces. Muscular force: Force resulting due to the action of muscles is called muscular force. For example, pushing a load requires muscular force. Moreover, internal body activities like breathing, digestion are possible due to muscular force. Also, this force helps animals to perform various actions like pulling cart. Therefore, muscular force is a contact force.

Friction: Frictional force always acts in the direction opposite to applied force. For example if force is applied in left direction, frictional force will act in right direction. Frictional force is the one which enables us to walk on the ground. If there is less friction just for example water is spread on the ground then it becomes difficult to walk. As frictional force requires contact between the force exerting body and body on which action is happening therefore it is contact force.

Non contact forces

Magnetic force: Take two bar magnets bring the similar poles towards each other. In this case, when first magnet is brought near second, first magnet moves away. Here the direction of both magnets is same. Now bring the opposite poles of magnets towards each other. In this case, second magnet moves towards the first. Here the direction of motion of second magnet is opposite to the first. Here, there is no physical contact between the magnets still the magnet moves this means there is some force present in between the magnet which is exerted without contact. The force which arise due to attraction or repulsion between the poles of magnet is called Magnetic force.

Electrostatic force: Take a plastic straw and divide it into two parts, now suspend one help of thread. Rub one end of another part with paper. Bring rubbed end near the first part. In this case you can observe that freely suspended straw gets attracted towards first. This is because there is transfer of charges between paper and straw. As a result, straw end get charges. The charged end then exert attractive force on the neutral first straw. Rub the free end of suspended part with another sheet of paper. Now bring the rubbed end of second part near the rubbed end of freely suspended part. In this case, it gets pushed away. Here both the ends gets charges therefore repulsion is seen. “The attractive or Repulsive force arising due to non moving charges present in the body is called electrostatic force”. As this force is present without direct contact between the two bodies therefore this is non contact force.
