Materials:
2 shallow pans,soil,leaves,water,small sprinkler
Procedure:
1.Put equal amounts of the same kind of soil 2 shallow pans
2.Place a layer of leaves on top of one pan and the other pan must left bare.
3.Raise the ends of both pans to represent a hillside
4.Use the sprinkler to pour slowly the water on the soil and observe the effects of water (rain) on the soil .
5.Repeat step 4 with the same amount of water falling on the soil with leaves.
6.Write your observations in you science journal.
Questions:
1.Which pan or set-up produced more soil movement?
2.How did the grass affect the amount of the moved soil?
3.Hiw do plants prevents soil erosion?
4.Why do you need to prevent soil erosion?
Answers & Comments
Answer:
1. We can conclude that the pan without any plants has more Soil movement (erosion is the best term) from the rain than the pan of soil with plants.
2. the grass prevent further or reduce the soil erosion in the pan with the plant/s
3. plants reduce or prevent soil erosion by holding the soil using its roots, as we can see in the mountains, for example, most mountains with a high number of vegetations tend to resist landslides more effectively than those mountains with fewer plants where most landslides or mudslides occur
4 this is crucial not only for extra oxygen for our planet or ecosystem but also it prevents structural or natural damage from landslides or mudslides caused by rain or thunderstorms.
