I believe the painting is about the brilliant stars that shine against the vast darkness of the night sky; this is most likely why it is called "Starry Night." Additionally, I was able to learn that this painting was inspired by the view of the painter's room, Vincent van Gough.
2. What story does it tell?
At first glance, I assumed the painting was simply depicting an evening in a small village, illuminated by gentle stellar lights. However, upon closer examination, I found several other elements of the painting that told a very different tale. The wavey silhouette on the left is a cypress tree, a type of plant that is often associated with mourning and death. I believe that the houses down in the valley also symbolize van Gough's need for affection and love following his feelings of loneliness. This may be a reflection of the painter's mental state; he was sick but saw hope in the shapes of stars.
3. What do the colors and hues of the original painting have to do with the mood or the tone of the painting?
The sky is a deep blue color that is strongly associated with sadness and isolation. On the other hand, the light emitted by the stars and the moon is predominantly yellow. Although yellow is associated with hope and joy, it can also be associated with illness and envy. I can sense that the painting feels cold, with blue hues and subtle colors; this suits the tale of a gloomy night.
4. What do the lines and shapes tell?
The first thing I noticed from the Starry Night painting was the swirly lines on it. This, I believe, may refer to the wind or cold. Additionally, we can distinguish the distinct shapes because they were not blended. This could imply that the painter feels certain of his emotions.
5. If you were to revise a feature of the painting. what would that be? Why?
I think that the painting is already beautiful in every way. Though if I had the opportunity to change one aspect of this masterpiece, it would most likely be the mountains in the background. I'd rather they were an ocean, the sea, or some other body of water. Deepwater represents worry and chaos; in light of this, I believe that this will accentuate the sorrow in this piece.
