The rose, which was probably a native of Persia, was
introduced in Europe by Alexander the Great. In ancient times,
the Greeks and Romans presented roses to guests at banquets,
where long tables were elaborately decorated with these
pular flowers.
Are you familiar with the story that a hero once ordered
several thousand dollar worth of roses for a single banquet?
The roses were once hung up at the special meetings as sign
t the details of the gatherings must be kept secret. Did you ever
ar how the name "The Wars of the Roses" originated?
The red rose was the emblem of the House of Lancaster,
to which Henry III belonged. Princess Elizabeth, daughter of Edward IV, was a
member of the House of York, whose emblem was the white rose. Historians tell us
that for many years, these two houses battled bitterly for possessions of the throne
of England. The rivalry between White Rose and Red Rose ended when Princess
Elisabeth became the bride of Henry III. In popularity contest conducted a few years
ago by an Amencan magazine, the Red Rose received almost five times the number
of votes than the White Rose received
