1.) - The letter “e” - The viewing of this familiar letter will provide practice in orienting the slide and using the objective lenses. The letter appears upside down and backwards because of two sets of mirrors in the microscope.

3.) The slide is observed from the side as the objective is rotated slowly into position. This will ensure that the objective will be properly immersed in the oil.
4.) Do not tilt the microscope or the eyepieces may fall off and be damaged. If you use immersion oil, always completely clean the oil from the lens before moving to a lower lens, or storing the microscope. Otherwise, you will make a big mess. Use only lens paper to clean the lens glass.
5.) The fine-adjustment knob on a light microscope focuses by moving the lens slowly and is used to focus on the specimen more clearly. It is used with the high-power objective lenses. The course-adjustment knob focuses by moving the lens quickly and is used to find the specimen your are observing.
