Independent Assessment 2: Venn diagram Are you familiar with the Venn diagram? A Venn diagram consists of overlapping figures, usually circle, representing relationship, similarities and differences of two samples. Let's try to have the physical Properties of lonic and Covalent Compounds in a Venn diagram. Directions: On the left side of the circle, you will write the physical properties of lonic compounds. On the right side, write the physical properties of covalent compounds. And at the center where the circles overlap, write the similarities of characteristics they possess. One (1) point for every correct answer. Try to do it now... Ionic compounds Covalent compounds
Answers & Comments
Answer:
Ionic compounds have high melting and boiling points because a application of significant amount of energy can break the strong inter-ionic attraction. Ionic compounds are soluble in water but insoluble in solvents like kerosene, petrol, etc.
Covalent compounds generally have low boiling and melting points, and are found in all three physical states at room temperature. Covalent compounds do not conduct electricity; this is because covalent compounds do not have charged particles capable of transporting electrons.
The most obvious similarity is that the result is the same: Both ionic and covalent bonding lead to the creation of stable molecules. The reactions that create ionic and covalent bonds are exothermic because elements bond together to lower their potential energy.
