Mahatma Gandhi launched the Quit India movement in 1942 to force the British to leave India. Several members of the Indian National Congress (INC) were arrested during this movement.
• During the second world war in 1939, Britishers wanted Indians to join the war and support the Britain.
• For this, the then governor general sent Cripps mission in order to get the cooperation of India.
• But Cripps mission was failed as it did not meet the demands of Indians.
• Mahatma Gandhi immediately launched Quit India movement after the failure of Cripps mission and raised the slogan “do or die" in a speech in Bombay session in 1942.
• Mahatma Gandhi asked the people to not to obey British and declare self governance among Indians.
• To supress the movement, British jailed many Indian National leaders including Mahatma Gandhi.
• The Indian National Congress was declared unlawful.
• When all the leaders of INC were in jail, Aruna Asaf Ali presided over INC and hoisted the national flag at Gowalia Tank Maidan.
• Finally, British declared independence on 15th August, 1947.
