Give reasons for the following: a) Mercury is used in thermometers. b) Clinical thermometer has a kink in its stem. c) Expansion on heating can be a nuisance.
a)We all know that most metals are good conductors of heat, electricity and are solid at room temperature. Mercury is the only metal that is in liquid state at room temperature. It is used in thermometers because it has a high coefficient of expansion which makes it easy to move in the thermometers as per the temperatures. Mercury has a boiling point which makes it suitable to measure higher temperatures.
b)Clinical thermometer has a kink in its stem because mercury is used in clinical thermometers, and the level of mercury rises rapidly with small changes in temperature, thermometers are designed with a kink near the bulb to prevent the level of mercury from falling and ensure that the correct reading is obtained even after the thermometer is taken out of the mouth.
c)Railway tracks are made up of iron which expands during the summers. Hence, if no gap is left between two conjoined tracks, they will bend and result into serious accidents.
