In an electric bell, there lies an electromagnet, which is a soft iron core of U-shape. When you switch on the current through the circuit, due to the magnetic field formed by the current, the soft iron core (of the electromagnet) gets magnetised. Since iron gets attracted to a magnet, the electromagnet attracts it. The hammer fixed at the end of the iron strip thus hits the gong and a sound is produced.
Now, if the current is switched off, there is no magnetic field formed. The soft iron core of the electromagnet gets demagnetised and the iron strip, which was attracted to it, returns back to its original position.
