1. Offering self- this is making self-available. Caregiver offers stating with the client. He or she can either talk or just stay with the client quietly.

2. Active Listening - Paying close attention to what the patient is saying by observing both verbal and non-verbal cues. This is clearing everything on your mind and giving full attention on what the client is saying.

3. Providing a Broad Opening - this is allowing the client to select a topic. 4. Providing Silence - Silence allows the patient to formulate his or her thoughts about how he or she wants to proceed.

5. Giving Information - Providing facts with the client establishes rapport (trust). This will also guide the client on what to expect and will gain his or her cooperation.

6. Presenting Reality - When the client is misinterpreting reality, the caregiver can present reality. This is done by calmly and carefully presenting the facts to the client and should never argue with the client.

7. General Leads - Encouraging the client to continue verbalizing his or her thoughts, feelings or ideas by using neutral expressions.

8. Reflecting - This is throwing back to the patient his or her statement thru question. This helps the client recognize his or her feelings and makes the client feel that he or she has the right to have opinions and decisions independently.​
