Figure2. An atom
Learning Task 1
1. What do you call the
positively charged particles?
2. What are the negatively charged
particles?
3.
If an atom has equal number of
positively charged particles and negatively
charged particles, what will be the charged of
the atom?
Answers & Comments
Answer:
1. Protons are positively charged particles found within atomic nuclei.
2.Electron: A negatively charged particle found circling or orbiting an atomic nucleus. An electron, like a proton is a charged particle, although opposite in sign, but unlike a proton, an electron has negligible atomic mass. Electrons contribute no atomic mass units to the total atomic weight of an atom.
3.When an atom has an equal number of electrons and protons, it has an equal number of negative electric charges (the electrons) and positive electric charges (the protons). The total electric charge of the atom is therefore Zero and the atom is said to be neutral
