FACTORS AFFECTING LIVING ORGANISM AND NONLIVING COMPONENTS An organism cannot live alone. It needs to interact with other organisms and its environment to survive. The environment is everything (biological, chemical, and physical) that surrounds an organism. It consists of the living and nonliving things acting on one another. The interactions of organisms with each other and with their environment make up an ecosystem. An ecosystem consists of the interacting organisms and the chemical and physical components of the environment.
Activity 1
Purpose: Make your own ecosystem inside a bottle
What You Need:
2-liter clear plastic bottle water
Cutter or a fair of scissors
Some gravel, sand, and garden soil
pH indicator thermometer
Mongo seeds or any seeds that you wish to grow inside the bottle
Ants, earthworms, small snails
What You Need to Do:
1. Cut the top of the plastic bottle on the area where it starts to thin toward the mouth.
2. For drainage, place about half-inch of gravel and another half-inch of sand into the bottle. Lightly shake the bottle to allow the gravel and sand to settle at the bottom.
3. Add about 2 to 3 inches of garden soil. Lightly shake the bottle to allow the soil to settle.
4. Record the soil initial pH and temperature.
5. Plant the seeds in shallow holes on the soil and cover them up with soil.
6. Sprinkle with enough water to provide the seeds moisture to germinate.
7. You may place the animals right away. Some animals may have to wait for the seeds to germinate and grow.

Guide Questions:
1. What are the abiotic and biotic factors in your ecosystem?
2. What is your dominant population in your ecosystem?
3. How did the populations of plants and animals in your ecosystem affect one another? Explain your answer.
