1.the word veda means the sacred knowledge . these edas were considered infallible as they imparted the highest spiritual knowledge. initially , the bedas were transmitted orally . since our knowledge of the early aryans is based on these vedas , the culture of these vedas is referred to as the vedic culture.
2. the early vedic literature was known as shruti , because it was conveyed by God to the great sages by hearing ( By shravan)and so it was called shruti.
3 a . the rig veda - it is the oldest religious text in the world. it contains 1028 hymns divided into 10 Mandalays. the hymns were dedicated with the sages by God. much of the Indian philosophy is based on rig veda . it also contains the famous gayatri mantra.
b. the Sam veda -it contains the 1875 hymns , some of which are borrowed from rig veda .
c. the yajur veda - it contains 2086 hymns .
d. the arthav veda - it contains 731 hymns .
the upanishades are the late sanskrit text s of religious teachings and ideas revered in Hinduism.
