Direction: Using compass and straightedge, construct the perpendicular bisector of line segment JC below.

How to construct the perpendicular bisector of line segment JC:

1. Use a straightedge to draw line segment JC.

2. Adjust the compass that the needle point of the compass is at point J and the pencil tip will fall at a point more than halfway of the line segment JC.

3. With the compass setting used in step 2, place the needle point of the compass at the point J and draw an arc above and below the line segment JC.

4. With the same compass setting used in step 3, place the needle point of the compass at point C and make an arc above and below the line segment JC.

5. Label the point of intersection of the arc J in each half-plane with point D and point E.

6. Draw line DE.

Note: Line DE is the perpendicular bisector of line segment JC and point F is the midpoint of line segment JC.

From the above illustration, we can say that the length of the line segment JF is the same as the length of line segment FC.
