Direction: Read and analyze the statement. Write DICTIONARY if the statement is true and INTERNET if
the statement is false.

1. Parts of Speech The dictionary uses nine abbreviations for the parts of speech.

2. Spell a word can make it difficult to find in the dictionary, but not impossible.

3. Main entries may be single words, compound words, abbreviations, affones, or phrases.

4. Guide words list the first and last defined word to appear on a page (or facing pages). Using
guide words help you quickly locate the word you seek.

5. Good dictionaries include all known definitions of a word.

6. The best place to look for synonyms and antanyms is the thesaurus.

7. Definitions of terms may also be searched via the World Wide Web.

8. A thesaurus is, in a sense, the apposite of a dictionary.

9. Geographic labels tell you in which region of the country (N. E for New England, West, South,
etc) the definition applies.

10. The preface contains explanations about the various symbols and abbreviations.​​
