The Framework of the Body The skeleton, like the body it supports, have three principal parts- the head, the trunk and the limbs. The bones of the head are joined together to form the skull. In the trunk or middle section of the body framework are the backbone or spinal column, the ribs and the breastbone, The bones of the arms and the legs form the limbs. The limbs have bones of different lengths and sizes. The skeleton or framework functions in several ways. First, it helps to give form and shape to the body. Second, it provides a place for muscles to be fastened so that with the use of the muscles and bones together, we can hold ourselves upright or erect and move about. Third, the skull helps to protect delicate parts of the body such as the brain, the eyes and the ears. The Framework of the Body
