Theories of social learning and social identity show that a variety of social forces promote positive adolescent adjustment. Peers, family, teachers, other attachment figures (e.g., sports team coach, youth group leader), and even (social) media are all sources of social influence. Given the importance of developmental changes in these social relationships during adolescence, we focus primarily on social influences from peers and family, as well as their interactions.

Although peers are generally referred to as a unified entity (i.e., people of the same age, status, or ability as another person), past study has looked at a wide spectrum of peers. As a result, we distinguish between closest friend dyads, smaller peer groups like cliques, and bigger peer groups of strangers. Family effects have numerous layers as well, and we'll look at how parents, siblings, and their interactions within the greater family unit influence each other.
