I have asked my wife not to adopt another dog after the loss of our pet dog in 2018.
I enjoy animals. I was raised in a family with dogs and cats, and my wife and I agreed to raise our own family with dogs (no cats due to allergy). We have had three dogs since starting our family.
But at this stage in my life, I enjoy my freedom most of all. The children are all adults and mostly independent. My wife and I have become “empty nesters” (not counting my youngest who moved home temporarily due to COVID-19).
This is our time to travel. We can visit family any time we want (pandemics aside), book last-minute travel plans, and never have to look for another dog sitter.
I also especially enjoy sleeping in on weekend mornings, and not having to run to the door at 6 AM to let an antsy dog outside.
I like going for walks when the weather cooperates, but prefer this to be more of an elective choice rather than an obligation (since a pet dog needs regular exercise).
Pets were a good fit for us while we raised a family. They were good companions for the children, and they were not such a strain on our routine—just one more head to care for.
But my wife and daughter are begging me to adopt another dog. They’ll send pictures. “See, he’s so CUTE!” I hear. Yes, they are always cute. That’s not the issue.
The issue is solely that a new pet is going to be a 10–15 year commitment, and I don’t want to take that on when I can first begin to experience real freedom after 25 years of raising a family.
But feel free to tell me how wrong I am… I’ve heard it before!
