Temperature Regulation- Increased mass in the walls increases the heat retaining capacity substantially. They retain heat during day time keeping indoors cool while at the night the walls radiate the captured heat to the interior space, thus regulating the temperature.
Material/ Structure- Stone is primarily used in towns/ cities due to easy availability and affordability. Sandstone as a basic building material requires a minimum width of 1′-1′6″ to transfer loads throughout the wall uniformly.
Similarly, adobe/ mud is used in villages as a fundamental building material that requires even greater width to withstand the requisite structural loads.
Construction Technique- With the lack of highly specialized and precise machinery to produce standard block sizes, generally walls are made from different sizes of stone blocks. To counteract this variation in block sizes, thicker walls are made to ensure more stable structures.
FLAT ROOFS
Temperature Regulation- Flat roofs have lesser surface area compared to slant roofs/ vaults/ domes. So, the direct heat gains from the roof are always less.
Additionally similar to thick walls, a water pool is also created sometimes on the roofs during day time and covered with canvas (to avoid evaporation). This increase the mass/ heat holding capacity that results into cooler interiors during daytime and warmer night-time.
Material/ Structure- With the availability of stone slabs that can span horizontally, the material in itself defines the flat roof typology.
Sandstone is formed by sedimentation process, thus layers of sand gets deposited in these slabs on top of each other. These multiple layers act similar to a ply that provides the tensile strength required for flat roofs.
Rain Water Harvesting- Flat roof area acts as a catchment area for rain water that is connected to an underground reservoir/ storage tank that is later used by the inhabitants.
