• The term "independent variable" means precisely what it sounds like. It is a variable that does not change as a result of the other variables you are attempting to assess. Someone's age, for example, may be an independent variable. Other things (such as what they eat, how often they go to school, and how much television they watch) will not modify a person's age. In reality, while looking for a link between variables, you are attempting to determine if the independent variable causes a change in the other variables, or dependent variables.

2.What is the dependent variable?

• A dependent variable, like an independent variable, is precisely what it sounds like. It is something that is affected by other circumstances. A test score, for example, may be a dependent variable since it can vary based on things such as how much you studied, how much sleep you had the night before the test, or even how hungry you were when you took it. When looking for a link between two things, you're usually attempting to figure out what causes the dependent variable to vary the way it does.

• An extraneous variable is any variable that you are not researching that has the potential to influence the results of your research project. Extraneous factors, if unchecked, can lead to incorrect conclusions regarding the link between independent and dependent variables.
