Oxidation of alcohol leads to formation of aldehyde which on oxidation forms carboxylic acid! oxidising agents are potassium dichromate and potassium permanganate.
● Answer - Ethanol can be oxidized to 1) acetaldehyde by CrOe/pyridine 2) acetic acid by alk.KMnO4
● Reactions - 1) Ethanol to acetaldehyde - Ethanol when treated with weak oxidizing reagents like CrO3/pyridine will give acetaldehyde. CH3CH2OH + [O] --> CH3CHO + H2O
2) Ethanol to acetic acid - Ethanol when treated with strong oxidizing reagents like alk.KMnO4 will give acetic acid. CH3CH2OH + 2[O] --> CH3COOH + H2O
