The Indian Marriage Customs vary depending on your religion, region and caste. There are certain factors which are common amongst all the different types of weddings that are seen in India.

            Firstly, marriages are usually arranged by the elders. Women usually are married by the time they turn 25 whereas men get married when they are around 30. Also, the male is always older compared to the female. When a person is eligible for marriage, the word is spread by relatives and community halls to other families. When a suitable match is found, their horoscopes are matched to see if they fit or not. If they are said to be a good fit for each other, then the families fix a date to meet each other. Generally, the male’s family goes to the female’s home to ‘see’ the bride. The bride’s family makes snacks and tea for the groom’s family and they discuss future plans. If both the families like each other, then the couple get engaged and a date is fixed for their wedding. Weddings usually last for two to three days. There are a number of ceremonies depending on religion. A typical Hindu wedding has many ceremonies starting with engagement and ending with the main wedding. There is a Sangeet where both families have a dance competition. The bride and the groom throw a party with their friends separately. Then, a reception is held for all their families and friends. Finally, the wedding happens at a fixed auspicious time and involves a number of rituals. Food is a major focus of Indian weddings. It is believed that a wedding party is a success if the food is enjoyed by all. Weddings in India are colourful and energetic affairs. They are fun-filled and are events where everyone gets together to have a great time.
