Instead of Christmas tree, the Greeks observe a ritual, which is hanging a wooden
bowl. It contains a sprig of basil tied to wooden cross. To keep the basil fresh, water is
placed in a bowl and is replenished every day by an adult, usually the mother. The water
from the bowl is sprinkled throughout the house to keep mischievous spirits away. In
some homes today, however, evergreen trees are decorated with tinsel and a star is
placed on top. On January 1, water in all containers inside the house is thrown away. It
is replaced with fresh water called "St. Basil Water." The ritual is known as "water
Renewal. Exchange of gifts happens also on this day. "Kala Christougenal" is Merry
Christmas in Greek.
in Greece, celebrations start on December 6, St. Nicholas Day, and end on
January 6, the Epiphany. On Christmas eve, children go from house to house to sing
and play their toy instruments. They are given sweets and dried fruits. This tradition is
called Kalanda. Pigs or lambs are slaughtered and roasted for the Christmas meal.
Sweet loaves of bread called Christopsomos or Christ Bread baked with its crust
decorated with something about the family are placed on the table.
