D. Development > LAYERS OF THE ATMOSPHERE There is a massive blanket that is surrounding the earth and it is called the ATMOSPHERE. It is made up of different gases mostly nitrogen and oxygen which interact with the other types of gases such as argon, helium, carbon dioxide, neon, water vapor and dust. The atmosphere is divided into five layers namely: 1. Troposphere - layer of the atmosphere nearest the earth a. The troposphere goes from 0 km to 16 km. b. All weather develops in the troposphere. 2. Stratosphere - the second layer of the atmosphere a. The stratosphere goes from 16 km to 50 km. b. The protective ozone layer is found in this layer that protects us from the ultraviolet radiation of the sun. Mesosphere - the third layer of the atmosphere a. The mesosphere goes from 50 km to 90 km. b. Meteors burn up in this layer, C. Radio waves are reflected to earth in the mesosphere. Thermosphere - the fourth layer of the atmosphere The thermosphere goes from 90 km to 300 km. b. Curtains of light called auroras occur in this layer. The ionosphere is found in the thermosphere. This is the component of the thermosphere that makes the auroras. Exosphere the last layer of the atmosphere The exosphere is the outermost layer of the atmosphere. b. Satellites orbit earth in the exosphere.​
