Ctivity 2: Study the following properties of materials. 1. Physical properties = characteristic of matter that can be readily observed without
changing its composition
A Hardness the ability of a material to resist pressure
B. Malleability - the ability of a material to be pounded into thin sheets
C Ductility the ability of a material to be drawn into thin wires
D Porosity - the ability of a material to allow water and gases to pass through it
E Flexibility the ability of a material to bend or roll without breaking easily
F Thermal Conductivity - the ability of a material to transfer heat from one area to another
G. Brittleness the ability of a material to be easily broken
H Elasticity the ability of a material to return to its original size and shape without
breaking
II. Chemical properties = are properties that can be observed or measured only when matter
undergoes a change to become an entirely different kind of material
J. Combustibility = ability of a material to burn
K Flammability = ability of a material to ignite or easily catch fire
L. Chemical Reactivity - the ability of material to react and produce new materials when
combined with oxygen, acid, or water
M. Biodegradability = ability of a material to decompose
N. Toxicity - the degree to which a chemical substance can damage an organism
