The Local and NationalElections 2022, many of us were holding our breaths over the tense presidential election in the United States, wondering whether it would be four more years of Donald Trump or a new era under Joe Biden, and six years of Duterte's leadership in the Philippines. We are wondering if who are the next leader.
As the Philippines approaches the 2022 elections, we have time to think about our own country’s leadership. Those who believe they can do everything they want while in power will face the same finite truth. Sure, there is a chance that they may cling on to power for a few more years. However, democratic leadership has a beginning and an end in this country. Nothing lasts indefinitely. While our high-ranking officials frequently get away with crimes committed while in office, and our judiciary may not be the most effective, these factors should not deter us from using judicial mechanisms to demand justice in its true sense, not just justice in terms of words, rhetoric, and strategies. The election results aren't merely cause for celebration or solace for those who lost. For us voters, it is a time to reflect on the end, continuation, or the beginning of visions and actions that we have collectively chosen for our society—whether or not they are mindful of the lessons of the past, attuned to the needs of the present, and responsible for their consequences in the future. For politicians, now is the time to consider the legacy they wish to leave to society, as well as the weight of duty they bear in shaping their fellow citizens' present and future.
