Why can you not throw a raw egg against a wall without breaking it, but you can throw it with the same speed on a cloth without breaking it?

The egg does not break when thrown against the sagging sheet because the sheet provides more time for the collision with the egg. This reduces the force that would of been exerted by the egg if it had been thrown against the wall.
