Arachne is the daughter Idmon of Colophon in Lydia, a dyer in purple. She was a weaver of cloth that made beautiful abstract art in the cloth, they gave her the nickname of Arachnes (or something like that) for her talented weaving skills. She was so full of pride that she was bold enough to challenge Athena, goddess of wisdom. Athena saw her bold act that she disguised herself as an old woman and approached Arachne, she unmasked herself in front of the crowd that was surrounding her and challenged her to the weaving contest, one must present their most beautiful cloth art (again something like that). Of course Arachne won by her art of the greek gods getting drunk and having affair, ashamed was Athena by her art, that she punished her by turning her into a spider. Arachne fled the scene to the mountains, and soon she became the first ever spider in history. (Correct me if I'm wrong on this bc I had forgotten some of the story of Arachne, and also I only know one)
