In some cases, they will allow an inmate to attend the funeral. However, it depends on their security level, their history of violent or escapist behavior, mental health status, etc. If the inmate is a low risk, then the prison can authorize attendance at the funeral. When this happens, the inmate (or their family) will be required to pay for the guards that will be needed to escort them to and from services. Unfortunately, I didn't qualify, even though I was to be paroled in just a few months.

I think they would allow a visit to the funeral home and the funeral itself in handcuffs, in a lot of countries.
