Ways to Separate Components of Mixtures
1. salt from seawater - Evaporation
2. Fruits from fruit salad - Handpicking or Physical manipulation
3. Coconut milk from grated coconut - Filtration
4. Needle from assorted buttons - Use of Magnet
5. Rice from water - Decantation
Explanation:
Mixtures are made up of two or more substances that are physically combined. Since there is no chemical reaction involved, the components can be separated physically. There are several techniques in separating components of mixtures and below are some of these:
1. Evaporation
It is a technique that is used in separating a homogeneous mixture or a solution. In this method, the solution is heated until the solvent evaporates and it turns into a gas. As the solvent evaporates, it leaves behind the solid residue which is the solute. In seawater, during evaporation, water evaporates leaving the salt behind.
2. Handpicking/ Physical Manipulation
This method involves simply picking out the desired component of the mixture. This is applicable to mixtures that are made up of components that are large enough for us to pick. In fruit salad, we can manually pick or scoop the fruits from other ingredients of the fruit salad to separate the components.
3. Filtration
It is the method used of separating a liquid from an insoluble solid. In this process, the insoluble solid particles are separated from the liquid. Various filtering materials are normally used like filtering paper or other materials. The grated milk and coconut milk by using a filter. The coconut milk will pass through the filter and grated coconut will be left in the filter.
4. Use of Magnet
It is the method used to separate magnetic from nonmagnetic substances. In separating needle and assorted buttons, the needle will be attracted to the magnet.
5. Decantation
It is a process to separate a mixture by removing a liquid layer that is free of a precipitate, or the solids that had settled in a solution. This is used either to obtain a decant (liquid free from particulates) or to recover the precipitate. As you pour out or decant the water, we get to separate rice from water.
