Sources of energy can be renewable or nonrenewable. These sources are important as they supply us with energy that we need to function on a daily basis. The difference between these two types of sources is that renewable sources such as geothermal, hydropower, wind, can naturally replace themselves while nonrenewable sources such as coal, oil, natural gas are limited in supply and cannot be sustained. Oil, natural gas, and coal are referred to as fossil fuels. They originally come from dead plants and animals that have decayed over millions of years.
Data shows that a large percentage of our energy source comes from nonrenewable sources such as coal. 52.05% of gross power generation comes from coal according to the Department of Energy (DOE) and only 22.27% comes from renewable sources. With this data, I think that the government still has to explore more non-renewable energy resources of the country.
There are advantages in the use of nonrenewable sources such as they are energy-rich and relatively cheap to process but the negative impacts of the use of nonrenewable sources outweigh the benefits. Aside from the fact that they are of limited supply, burning of these sources releases large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The release of carbon dioxide into the air results in the rising level of greenhouse gas which is the main cause of global warming. The government has to consider that our country, the Philippines, is vulnerable to the negative impacts of climate change. For instance, the rising sea levels will definitely affect our country since we are an archipelago. Also, we have been affected by and prone to the extreme weather disturbances caused by climate change. Another reason why the Philippines should explore renewable sources is the limited supply of deposits of fossil fuels in the country. We continue to depend on imported fuels that have made rates of electricity high.
It is in this light that it is recommended that the government should consider the extensive use of renewable energy sources. They are clean energy sources and are available in unlimited supply. It offers also a possible solution to the depletion of nonrenewable sources.
In conclusion, shifting to the use of renewable energy sources will help us achieve independence in terms of the energy sources and at the same time combat climate change in the most efficient and practical way.
