Becoming a child of God starts with confessing your sins to Jesus, receiving Jesus as personal Lord and Savior, loving and obeying Him. Please refer to John 1:12-13
This means, if you believe that Jesus is the son of God and you receive Him as your Lord and Savior then you will be adopted to the Holy family, you will become a child of God.
Before, we were slaves of sin so we live in darkness then Jesus was the light and when we receive the light, then we are not slaves anymore but children of God.
John 8:34-36 says Jesus answered them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.
This means, you need to confess of your sins to Jesus, receive His forgiveness and He will cleanse you of your unrighteousness and you are not a slave of sin anymore but a child of God. Just like the prodigal son who had sinned against his father yet he went back to him, asked forgiveness and his father received him. That is also the character of God, if you confess of your sins, He will accept you, then if you receive His son Jesus Christ then you become a child of God.
John 8:42 Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and came from God; nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me".
God sent His only begotten son here on earth to save us from our sins and make us closer back to God. So if you love Jesus then God will be your Father.
John 1:9-11 says " That was the true light which gives light to every man coming to the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.
John 1:12-13 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man but of God.
