(Musical Elements)
Timbre- Timbre refers to the character, texture, and colour of a sound that defines it. It's a catchall category for the features of sound that are not pitch, loudness, duration, or spatial location, and it helps us judge whether what we're listening to is a piano, flute, or organ.
Dynamics- Volume (amplitude)—how loud, soft, medium, gradually getting louder or softer (crescendo, decrescendo). Tempo: Beats per minute; how fast, medium, or slow a piece of music is played or sung.
Rhythm- There are three elements of rhythm: tempo, content, and quality (see Figure 4.1). As in music, architecture rhythm is not just the repetition of a beat.
Melody- "The essential elements of any melody are duration, pitch, and quality (timbre), texture, and loudness. Though the same melody may be recognizable when played with a wide variety of timbres and dynamics, the latter may still be an "element of linear ordering."
Form- Form is the organizing structure of a piece of music. Clues to the form of a piece of music can be found in many different ways; through the phrases of a melody; through the text; through harmonic structure; through the repetition of melodic material or the introduction of new, contrasting material.
