I do however, always choose longer pins. You can keep pins near your machine by using a pin cushion or a magnetized pin holder.
One handy tool I would never want to be without is a tool for pressing out corners. This is very useful for turning out items that have pointy corners like collars, sashes, belts, ties, pillowcases, front edges on jackets, and so on.
