when determining an element, you always look at the protons first. nitrogen has 7 protons, nothing else can (no single atom can have 7 protons and not be nitrogen, i think.) since 10–7=3, it has 3 extra electrons which means it has a -3 charge (electrons are negative.) and so it would need to be an ion. “N(-3)” would be your answer, but the -3 would be written on the right hand top, like a exponent.
