1) It may sound as if the situation is hopeless for developing countries ever

2) to have a competitive edge in global trade - but perhaps not East Asia, for

3) example, has found far more economic success than Africa has. The key to

4) success seems to lie in each government's economic policy, Malaysia,

5) Indonesia, and Thailand have the same tropical climate as many African

6) countries, but their economies - unlike those of Africa - are growing fast. The

7) reason? Their governments have created an economic climate in which people

8) can move from agriculture to manufacturing. Geography is not the terrible

9) obstacle to manufacturing that it is to farming To help new entrepreneurs,

10) these govemments pay careful attention to areas such as intrastructure and

11) telecommunication. In other countries, such as India, information technology is

12) driving the economy in some cities. Computer technology doesn't depend on

13) geography, but it requires educated workers. Therefore, education must be a

14) priority. In addition, govemments of developing countries must work with

15) developed countries and persuade them to drop protectionist policies. Clearly,

16) it is possible for government, policy to prepare a path out of poverty in even

17) landlocked, tropical countries.
