Activity 2: Static Magie!
There are many ways to understand how static electricity works. Let us
experience and be amazed by how this static electricity makes magic!
Materials
Balloon
Hair
Rod
Paper
Flowing Water
Comb
1. Run a comb through your hair to charge the comb with static electricity. The
comb can now be used to attract neutral pieces of paper.
a What happened to the pieces of paper when you place the comb
above them?
b. What can you conclude about what happened?
2. Inflate two balloons and tie them with the same length of the string. Rub one
balloon vigorously on your hair or against a woolen material in one direction
Holding each balloon by their string, bring the balloon near to each other.
a What happened to the two balloons when they are put together?
b. What happen if two balloons were rubbed and place together?
3. Rub a glass rod to a cloth. After rubbing, place the charged rod near a
running faucet water
a What happened to the flowing water when the rod is placed near it?
b. What can you conclude about this?

Answer:
1)
A: The paper is initially attracted to the comb because the comb causes separation of charge in the paper. The part of the paper pieces with positive charge is attracted to the comb. When the paper touches the comb, some of the excess negative charge in the comb is transferred to the paper
2)
A:Negative charges attract to positive charges. If a balloon is not rubbed with the wool cloth, it has an equal amount of negative to positive charges, so it will attract to a rubbed balloon. When both balloons are rubbed with the wool cloth, the both receive negative charges, so they will repel each other.
B:When rubbing a balloon with a wool cloth, it puts negative charges on the balloon. Negative charges attract to positive charges. ... When both balloons are rubbed with the wool cloth, the both receive negative charges, so they will repel each other.
3)
A: When the rod is placed close to a stream of water, the negative charges (electrons) in the polyethylene rod attract the partially positive hydrogen ends of nearby water molecules. This causes the water molecules to rotate so that their positive ends are closer to the rod than their negative ends.
