Study the following strategies in using text clues to understand word meaning.

Aside from using a dictionary, a reader can get or guess the meaning of unfamiliar word with the help of textual clues.

Types of Text Clues

1. A definition clue gives statement on explaining or describing.

Ex. A moat is a water canal built around the castle to keep enemies away.

2. A synonym clue gives similar meaning to the unfamiliar word.

Ex. Mario was glad that the examination was over. He was also happy for his classmates.

3. An antonym clue gives opposite meaning to the unfamiliar word

Ex. The water in the river is calm but becomes rough when there is a storm.

4. An explanation clue gives explanation within the sentence or immediately after the unfamiliar word.

Ex. Mario is so arrogant. He is always bragging about how great he is in sports.

5. An examples clue gives specific examples in the sentence that helps define the term.

Ex. He is good in ball games such as volleyball, basketball and soccer.​
