The players move farther away from the garter as the height of the garter increases to absorb more energy from the surroundings. With the absorb energy, they can now be able to succeed the game or level as the height of garter increases.
In relation with atoms, it changes from a ground state to an excited one by getting energy from its surroundings. The process is called absorption. When electrons absorbs energy, they'll jump into a higher level of energy.
Additional Information:
The opposite of absorption is emission. It is the reverse process, instead of taking energy from the surrounding, this gives off or releases energy. Meaning, from excited state to ground state again.
