Hello!Q. A straight wire carrying a current acts like a magnet. Then why is a coil of a wire is used in an Electromagnet instead of just a straight wire ?
=> Yes, a straight wire carrying a current acts like a magnet because currents also produce magnetic field.
Then,
A coil of a wire is used in an Electromagnet instead of just a straight wire because coil has many number of loops of wire and each loop of wire behave as a magnet. Each loop of wire is like a little magnet that has its own magnetic field , all loops together produce a strong magnetic field but a straight wire do not produce more magnetic field compare to coil of a wire that's why a coil of a wire used in an electromagnet instead of a straight wire.
• What's an electromagnet ?
=> An electromagnet is a coil of wire wrapped around an iron core. When an electric current flows through the coil , it creates a magnetic field. This produces temporary magnetism in the iron core. Thus , magnetism of current carrying coil and iron core together produces a strong magnetic field , when electric current stops , iron core is no longer magnetic and it doesn't behave like a magnet.
• Give three uses of electomagnet in daily life.
1 ) Electric bell ( It is used in electric bell , in schools and institutes ).
2 ) Radios and speakers ( It is used in radios and speakers , in home ).
3 ) Mobiles and smartphones ( It is used in mobiles and smartphones , in any place )
• What's magnetic effect of electric current ?
=> If we brought a compass near a current carrying conductor , needle of compass will be deflected because of flow of electricity , this is known as magnetic effect of electric current.
:-) Hope it helps !
