Why was Lord Rama sent to exile for exactly 14 years?
Mata Kaikeyi was favourite queen of king dashratha. She undertook responsibility of upbringing all four princes - rama, laxmana, bharta and shatrungya. She only taught good principles of living to all brothers such as helping all people wether rich or poor, marrying only one women and loving her only, obeying all instructions of parents and relatives which are given for their own good. In short all lord rama’s principles were taught by queen kaikeya only.
One day lord rama met with a rishi who was expert in determining every person’s purpose of birth, who recognized lord rama as god vishnu’s incarnation. He explained lord rama his purpose of establishing a Ram Rajya in the entire world.
But for this purpose to be achieved lord rama has fulfill certain conditions laid down in ancient scriptures, Vedas and upanishads and as per same :
Ruler has to be free from all lusts, anger and greed for money, kingdom and must be a perfect dharma ruler!
Moreover in order to set up Ram Rajya, he has to understand the sorrow of not only poor and ill humans and sages but also of all animals, birds and creatures, as in a Ram rajya humans and creatures both live a satisfied and peaceful life!
For this purpose the ruler must be away from his own kingdom for 4 years, must live with animals and birds and serve them happily for 4 years and must be in state of sanyasi for 6 years i.e 4 + 4 + 6 = 14 years.
Lord Rama disclosed this to his mother keikayi since at that time mata kaushaliya(who gave birth to lord Rama) was in meditation and he do not want to disturb her. Mata keikayi decided to help his son lord rama but she knew that his father dashratha has putramoh for lord rama, so he will never sent his son to exile directly. Mother keikayi was looking for the reason to help his son and suddenly her maid came to explain about bharta’s life and other things as in the story…… This became a good reason for keikayi to use boons of king dashratha and helping lord rama to fulfill his life’s purpose.
Meanwhile lord rama was also in dillema that how could he left his father in grief. But when he was ordered to exile for exactly 14 years by mother keikayi’s boon to dashtratha, he understood that mata keikayi has helped him.
Also in place of lord rama king bharata will temporarily hold throne of ayodhya.
This itself means that lord rama exiled as per his own wish and not on his father’s straight one order. If mata keikayi wanted she would have brainwashed her son bharata against lord rama for throne of ayodhya just like “shakuni in mahabharata” but she didn’t did it as she wanted to help his son and not ruined him.
OF course mata keikayi and lord rama never disclosed this plan to anyone even after ram’s victory over ravana.
Lord’s rules never prejudice to anyone whether he is father or a son!! But people do not understand god and either make ilusionary interpretations of god’s deed or criticize them for no reason or proper base.
